San Antonio has subtropical weather, with mild winters and very hot and humid summers. Knowing this information we can compile a list of grass species that will thrive in San Antonio. The most common type of grasses found in San Antonio include St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Zoysia grass, each of these species has their advantages and disadvantages.
St. Augustine grass is dark green, with broad, flat blades. When given the right amount of nutrients and water it will grow fast and dense. This grass uses “runners” to grow horizontally, which helps establish a good looking turf in no time. It is readly available at grass vendors, making it a great choice. St. Augustine is generally mowed weekly at about 3-4 inches high. If it is not maintained at that height, it will get out of control relatively quickly.
Bermuda Grass is well suited for the dry climate of San Antonio.
